With severe winds and ridiculous cold weather hitting Sydney lately, it’s a good time to look out for moisturizers that keep your skin from looking chaffed and flaky this winter. So below are five facial moisturizers for men that we at HOMMESTYLER.com have our eyes on. These moisturizers were chosen for how quickly they penetrate the skin (without being oil), minimal irritating ingredients and how well they protect your skin against the blasting winter wind.
In our research, we’ve found that there’s a serious lack of quality skincare products for men, and yet, we’re one of the fastest growing markets in the skin care industry. We’ve examined numerous men’s product range and have to admit that no single brand (at least, not one we found), could be solely relied on for your skincare routine.
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15
This Kiehl’s moisturizer actually comes in four different forms; the jar version, the no SPF, SPF with tint, and this is one without tint. We’ve chosen this one because firstly, jar products are a no go (there are exceptions but think about all where your hands have been), and because tinted moisturizers doesn’t match everyone’s skin color. Another reason this moisturizer makes the cut is because it has SPF, and although 15 isn’t what I usually go to (SPF 30 is ideal), this is a solid choice for this winter.
Cetaphil DailyAdvance Ultra Hydrating Lotion
Cetaphil is a favourite at HOMMESTYLER.com. Their products contain proven ingredients, no fragrance and aren’t overpriced. They’re also available at any pharmacy and chemist which makes Cetaphil a convenient option. The DailyAdvance Ultra Hydrating Lotion is a good moisturizer – especially for men and in winter – because it’s a thicker version of their cream, yet doesn’t leave your skin feeling oily. That said, some may find it leaves a slight film on the skin. On top of this, because there’s no SPF, I’d recommend it as a night time moisturizer, straight after using a cleanser.
Clinique Age Defense Hydrator SPF 15 for Men
At $75 for a 50ml size, this is by far the priciest moisturizer here. That said, the Clinique Age Defense Hydrator SPF 15 remains a solid choice since it contains sunscreen. This moisturizer glides into the skin very elegantly and you just need to a small amount to keep your skin hydrated. Provided that you only use it in the mornings, the 50ml tube should keep you going for a month.
LAB Series Daily Moisture Defense Lotion SPF 15
Although LAB is one of the few men’s skin care companies, they don’t do much to help advance their market’s knowledge. If anything, they capitalize on the market’s lack of awareness. In LAB’s product video, it says “if you only have room for one product, this is it… its breakthrough technology contains solar-activated protection from harmful UVA/UVB rays, pollution and free radicals”. We say this is the most ridiculous PR spin ever. Their ‘breakthrough solar-activated protection technology” merely means this moisturizer contains chemical sunscreen (which is one of the only two methods to make sunscreen anyway).
Ridiculous PR spin aside, this LAB moisturizer is an effective one that does the job. It soothes the skin (great for guys prone to razor bumps) and penetrates the skin quickly.
Trilogy Moisturizer with SPF 15
We like Trilogy since they’re a no-frills skin care company that uses natural and organic products where possible. The fact that they have their ingredients stated on their website (you’d be surprised how difficult this is) adds points to this moisturizer. The use of essential oils may irritate guys with sensitive skin, but it’s a natural product that effectively seals in moisture. Once again, the SPF makes a it an ideal moisturizer for daily use.
