I recently received the new season’s bellobox in the mail and decided write this review. For those who don’t know, bellobox is a service that sends you a new set of grooming products each quarter. The idea is that you’ll get different products delivered to your house, so you can try (and eventually buy) various brand’s goods and products. It began with their female counterpart, bellabox, but realising its potential for men, bellobox was created.

For Spring, bellobox includes products that reflect the fact that there’s more sunlight and that you’ll probably be spending more time in the sun. For a $30 subscription per quarter, you get a box chocked full of products, including:

The idea of bellobox isn’t new – there are plenty of similar services in the market – but it’s the quality of the subscription and the products included is what matters. The range of products is also important. If you like to experiment with different brand, bellobox is a convenient way to try out different products that will make grooming that much easier.

I also asked Sarah Hamilton, founder of bellobox and bellabox about the service, how they work with brands and how they choose their products.

HommeStyler: Who is your target audience for bellobox?
Sarah Hamilton: Our target bellobox audience is vast and always growing, which isn’t surprising, as the wider grooming market has become more and more prevalent and acknowledged by more and more men. Today, plenty of guys are exploring different grooming options, regardless of age, as has traditionally been the case with women. With this in mind, we try to keep our boxes relevant for any guy – whether he is 16 or 60! As is often the case when it comes to getting the basics right, the most important parts of a grooming routine remain the same for nearly all men – ace these and not only will you look great, you’ll feel it too.

HS: How do you select bellobox products each season?
SH: We always select products that are most suited to the time of the year that each box is released. For instance, in winter we included products that would soothe dry skin, and in summer we sample products that protect the skin from the sun. Regardless of the season, each product is trialled by a panel of ‘bello boys’, and we choose box products based on their recommendations, so that not only are they relevant, but they also have many ticks of approval!

HS: How do you choose the products so they reflect the grooming needs of different men?
SH: We try to select a broad range of products so they suit all men. Also, products cover a spectrum of grooming needs, from skincare, to shaving, to hair care, to fragrance. This way there will always be a product that speaks to a certain grooming preference for all men receiving bellobox .

HS: Can you talk about how you work with brands to choose which of their products bellobox will feature?
SH: Our brand partners will normally have an idea of the products they would like to sample. Often, they may have a new product to launch, or they might wish to promote a hero product. Either way, we work with the brands to figure out which of their products will most suit our members and their grooming needs, based upon extensive previous feedback, as well as current environmental factors – hence the seasonal boxes!

HS: What kind of other products and brands can we expect bellobox to work with?
SH: We are always on the lookout for new brands and we love to feature innovations in the grooming industry. Looking forward to 2013, we have a mix of well-known and emerging brands set to feature in our bellobox , as well as across our other boxes for women (bellabox ) and parents (bellababy) so that everyone can have the chance to experience exciting beauty and grooming discovery.

    Love that they have this now for men – was familiar through friends getting the bellabox, but had no idea they would do this for men. Good to know! Will have to look at getting my own subscription!
