In many people’s mind, Lacoste, much like Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Kenneth Cole and DKNY are streetwear brands. Nothing about these brands particularly evoke luxury. But after Lacoste’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week, many are changing their mind.
Lacoste’s lead designer, Felipe Oliveira Baptista created a futuristic collection which stayed true to the brand’s sporting heritage, showing a modern explorer in full gear and ready for battle. There was colour-blocking, geometric patterns, iceberg prints and creative use of materials like neoprene and heavy duty cotton.
In particular, the outwear stands out – think the oversized jumpers and bright coats. Some of the garments veered towards space age living – the Jetson’s, anyone? – but overall, the collection was a refreshing facelift for the dormant brand.
