It’s been 15 years since the iconic Nike Tuned Air sneaker first burst onto the scene, and to commemorate the anniversary of this famous sneaker, Foot Locker is relaunching it in its original 1998 colour on Wednesday 27 November 2013.
The Nike Tuned Air is dropping into selected stores nation wide this week and it’s been exclusive to Foot Locker since its release. Both the adult and kids version will be available.
The Nike Tuned Air was first made famous because it was the brand’s first shoe equipped with Tuned Air technology (warning: link may lead to nerd-overdose), which maximizes cushioning and impact protection by installing multiple air pockets midsole.
According to Nike, the secret to the Tuned Air sole – originally called ‘sky sole’– is the specially designed tuned hemisphere: two balls strategically positioned facing opposite directions to ensure fine-tuned resistance, stability and support. The sneaker’s lightweight and cushioning has meant it’s been worn by professional athletes and sneaker addicts alike. Cynics will say all this is just a marketing ploy, but given that Nike spends a huge amount on R&D each year, we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.
Foot Locker is re-releasing the Nike Tuned Air in the original ‘Hyperblue’ colour, a faded sky blue style with fluro-yellow Nike accents. Sure, it may not be for everyone, but if e-bay sales of other anniversary Nike Tuned Air sneakers are anything to go by, these will sell like hotcakes.
