Goldwell Thickening Shampoo for Men: The Claim

According to the Goldwell website, this Dualsenses thickening shampoo “provides more fullness and strength for fine and thinning hair” for men by using “special strengtheners and protein”.

If we look at the ingredients in the shampoo, we’ll see that the first few ingredients (aside from water) are Sodium Laureth Sulfate, PEG-90 Glyceryl Isostearate and Coco-Glucoside. The first two ingredients are nothing special as they’re merely foaming and cleanings agents. Coco-Glucoside on the other hand, is derived from natural ingredients (you guessed it, coconut) and can help “smooth out the hair structure and increase manageability1.

So far so good, although it’s worth noting that these ingredients are typical of many shampoo products – thickening or not. However, once you go down to the 12th ingredient, this is where things get interesting.

Goldwell Thickening Shampoo for Men uses Glycoproteins which, according to this and this source, may be involved in cellular repair and help the body deal with internal and external stress. This seems to imply that Glycoproteins may help strengthen hair. Of course, in many cases, scientific trials are often done in vitro, meaning they are testing in labs, not on humans, but if the theory sticks, Goldwell’s claims stand true.

In regards to the “Guarana Caffeine Complex” touted by the brand, there’s no explanation of this on their website, but seeing that the shampoo contains Paullina Cupana Seed Extract (aka Guarana) and Caffeine, we’ll have to take this “Complex” as a combination of the these two ingredients.

The Goldwell Thickening Shampoo contains caffeine, a proven hair stimulant

Guarana is a plant found in Brazil commonly used in beverages as a stimulant. However, we weren’t able to find any scientific research to show how it can help thicken or strengthen hair. On the other hand,  Caffeine has shown to be a promising candidate for hair growth stimulation, according this study by a German professor. In fact, it seems caffeine is so good for the hair that Alpecin have created the world’s first caffeine shampoo which they claim can penetrate and stimulate hair follicles.

Review: Goldwell Thickening Shampoo for Men – The Verdict

The Goldwell Thickening Shampoo for men appears to be a typical men’s shampoo which makes use of ingredients which may help strengthen the hair and reduce hair loss. The stand out ingredient is the use of caffeine, although being the 10th ingredient on the list, it’s unclear how much effect it could really have on one man’s hair. Whether or not the product can really live up to its claim that it can “strengthen the hair” remains to be seen.

On the plus side, Goldwell’s packaging it fantastic. The shampoo container is sturdy and the top designed to prevent any leakage, even when dropped on the floor, making it a great shampoo for the gym bag. The smell is also masculine and yet not overwhelming.
