Review: Headlube Moisturizer Lotion by Headblade

Headlube Lotion is a moisturizer by US grooming brand Headblade targeting ‘blokey blokes’

There are two ways modern skincare brands and grooming companies get men to buy their products: clever marketing and quality products. Unfortunately, Headblade’s Headlube Moisturizer Lotion falls short in the quality department.

According Headblade’s official website, the Headlube moisturizer lotion is specifically formulated for the scalp and can help moisturize the skin and keep it supple. Whilst the key ingredients – mineral oil and stearic acid – have indeed been proven to be effective emollients which keep moisture locked in (source: here and here), many of its other ingredients are potentially irritating to the skin. For example, Headlube lotion’s ingredients include Peppermint Extract, Arnica Montanga Flower Extract and Sage Leave Extract all of which are unnecessary in a moisturizer. In particular, men with sensitive skin should avoid products with superfluous ingredients.

We find it ironic how Headlube lotion prides itself in not using any fragrances or dyes, and yet decided to include other potentially irritating ingredients.

Headlube Lotion comes in glossy and matte versions

Headlube lotion comes in two forms – matte and glossy. The ingredients in both are similar but the major difference is the finish. As you’d expect, the glossy version of the moisturizer gives you a slight shine after you apply it to your skin. This is great news if you want to have that ‘glowing’ look, but most men don’t need that seeing their skin tends to be oilier and often produce a natural shine.

If we had to make a choice between the two types of Headlube lotion, we’d go for the matte moisturizer. This is because the glossy version is A) too glossy for our taste and B) includes Safflower Oil which some people might be sensitive to.

Another reason we give a thumbs down to Headlube lotion is because there’s no sunscreen and no SPF in the product. (We’ve since discovered the Headblade offer Headlube lotion in SPF 30, which in our eyes is a much better moisturizer product than both Headlube Lotion matte or glossy.)

Our verdict on the HeadLube Lotion: Naming your product ‘HeadLube Lotion’ is definitely one way to get people’s attention, but whether or not the product is effective as a moisturizer is a whole differnt question. In our eyes, there are much better moisturizers than Headlube lotion in the market. If you insist on trying Headlube lotion, try their matte moisturizer over the glossy version.
