Slicked Back Undercut – Men’s Hairstyle Trend 2012
With the influence of shows like BoardWalk Empire, expect to see the slicked back undercut to be the hairstyle of choice for fashion-forward men this year. 2012 will see the undercut get a modern facelift with refined touches, updating a haircut that originated in the 1920s.
Michael Pitt pulls of the slicked back undercut hairstyle with ease in BoardWalk Empire. Of course, he has a hairstylist crew to help out, but if you want to achieve the same look, the key characteristics to this undercut are the short sides and short back, with some length through the top.
The hair on the top is always slicked backwards, which gives a different texture compared to the back and sides. The overall look is a timeless men’s hairstyle with a touch of edge.
2012 will see the variations of the slicked back undercut focus on:
A) How far up the short sides and back will be, and
B) How long the hair will be at the top.
The thickness of the sides and back will usually be a clipper number 2 or 3, but the top’s length is changeable depending on individual taste.
For a haircut like the slicked back undercut, we recommend men go to a traditional barber, since they’ll likely have more experience with this hairstyle than your trendy hairdresser.
Whilst this haircut easily suits lots of guys, always consult your barber/hairdresser to see what variations will suit your head shape and face. Those with longer and more angular faces in particular will benefit from the slicked back undercut since it brings out your features.
An important tip is that the quality of the slicked back undercut hairstyle depends on how sharp of an outline it gives, so when your hairdresser passes the mirror for you to get a final check, examine the sides and back of your head. If it’s not clean cut and precise, ask them to touch it up.
Slicked Back Undercut: Products to Buy
Gel is the only thing that will work with this look since it will keep the hair stationary. If you want your hair to look very stiff, choose a strong-hold gel. If you want to emphasize a little waviness, a lighter gel is a a better option. Don’t forget – some gels will produce white flakes if you comb or brush your hair after the gel has dried, so choose wisely.
Below are some recommended hairstyling products that will help you get the slicked back undercut look.

Hey guys, Just did a photoshoot with some double slicks! Did you see them? We didn’t undercut them like the Ralph Lauren NSW police files shoot but based it more on Chariots of Fire!! From the team as Lawsons Mens Hair
It suprises me that all these articles on hair styles state gel is the best product to pull this off.
A traditional pomade will give much better results, and will hold the style through the day.
I use water-soluble pomade like uppercut, it allows for a much tighter slick.
I’m a head with my friends over the slick back undercut. I think it’s awesome, they think it’s scummy.
I use fish pomade to slick my hair back gel just doesn’t really work, it’s too crispy!
For real 20s slick, you need to use products of that period or similar. I recommend Murray’s Hair Glo pomade, Royal Crown Hair Dressing or Tres Flores Pomade. All of these pomades work well for low profile slick backs giving you enough hold and that all important shine.
